Earth Hour is the biggest environmental awareness campaign ever seen! Earth Hour takes place once every year, the last Saturday of March. This year it will be on Saturday 26th from 8.30 to 9.30 PM local time. Its aim is to raise environmental awareness and get us do small things in our daily lives that together can have huge impacts: in other words, to go beyond the hour. It involves turning off your lights for 1 hour. Earth's hour. Earth Hour 2011 will go beyond the hour and beyond climate change, marking a moment where every individual, government and business can make their commitment to environmentally sustainable action for the forthcoming year. Homes, offices, government buildings will go dark to acknowledge the actions of people from all corners of the globe that go beyond the hour.
Сделай первый шаг - выключи свет 26 марта, в 20.30!
Час Земли - это символическая акция, общественный призыв к решительным мерам по сохранению климата. По оценкам ученых,Элизабет Тэйлор
Elizabeth Taylor is considered one of the last major stars, to have come out of the old Hollywood studio system. Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was born in London on February 27, 1932. Although she was born an English subject, her parents were Americans, art dealers from St. Louis, Missouri (her father had gone to London to set up a gallery). Her mother had been an actress on the stage, but gave up that vocation when she married. Elizabeth lived in London until the age of seven, when the family left for the US when the clouds of war began brewing in Europe in 1939. They relocated to Los Angeles. A family friend noticed the strikingly beautiful little Elizabeth and suggested that she be taken for a screen test. Her test impressed executives at Universal Pictures enough to sign her to a contract. Her first film released in 1942 when she was ten. Throughout the rest of the 1940s and into the early 1950s Elizabeth appeared in film after film with mostly good results. She grew from a doll-faced child starlet to become one of the silver screen's most striking beauties, not to mention a compelling actress and one of the world's most famous movie stars. She has been a natural magnet for publicity throughout her life and is one of the most photographed women in history. She even holds the record for the most appearances on the cover of Life Magazine. Taylor has received five Best Actresses nominations and two Oscar statuettes over the course of her amazing six-decade career. In 1963 she starred in Cleopatra , which was one of the most expensive productions up to that time--as was her salary, a whopping $1,000,000. Her personal life has been a tempest of love affairs, unsuccessful marriages and multiple medical problems. Upon the death of her friend, she began her crusade on the behalf of AIDS sufferers. In the 1990s, she has also developed a successful series of scents. Elizabeth Taylor is known internationally for her beauty, especially for those violet eyes, with which she captured audiences early on in her youth and has kept the world hooked on ever since.

Всемирный день воды
International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. The objective of World Water Day 2011 is to focus international attention on the impact of rapid urban population growth, industrialization and uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters on urban water systems. This is the first time in human history that most of the world's population live in cities: 3.3 billion people ...and the urban landscape continues to grow. 38% of the growth is represented by expanding slums, while the city populations are increasing faster than city infrastructure can adapt. This year theme, Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge, aims to spotlight and encourage governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to actively engage in addressing the challenges of urban water management.

Секреты изучения английского языка
Word Stress is a golden key number one for speaking and understanding English. Word Stress is very important. You can try to learn about Word Stress. This is one of the best ways for you to understand spoken English - especially English spoken fast.
What is Word Stress?
Take 3 words: photograph, photographer and photographic, for example. Do they sound the same when spoken? No! They sound different, because *one* syllable in each word is "stressed" (stronger than the others). PHOtograph, phoTOgrapher, photoGRAphic.
This happens in ALL words with 2 or more syllables:
TEACHer, JaPAN, CHINa, aBOVE, converSAtion, INteresting, imPORtant, deMAND, etCETera, etCETera, etCETera
The syllables that are not stressed are 'weak' or 'small' or 'quiet'. Native speakers of English listen for the stressed syllables, not the weak syllables. If you use Word Stress in your speech, you will instantly and automatically improve your pronunciation and your comprehension. Try to hear the stress in words each time you listen to English - on the radio, or in films for example. Your first step is to hear and recognize it. After that, you can use it!
We want to go.
Do we say every word with the same stress or force? No! We make the important words big and the unimportant words small. What are the important words in this sentence? Yes, you're right: WANT and GO.
We WANT to GO.
We WANT to GO to WORK.
We DON'T WANT to GO to WORK.
We DON'T WANT to GO to WORK at NIGHT.
Sentence Stress is very important!

Secret №2: SENTENCE STRESS
Sentence Stress is a golden key number two for speaking and understanding English. With Sentence Stress, some words in a sentence are stressed (loud) and other words are weak (quiet). Look at the following sentence:We want to go.
Do we say every word with the same stress or force? No! We make the important words big and the unimportant words small. What are the important words in this sentence? Yes, you're right: WANT and GO.
We WANT to GO.
We WANT to GO to WORK.
We DON'T WANT to GO to WORK.

Sentence Stress is very important!
Secret №3: LISTEN! LISTEN! LISTEN!
Students sometimes say: 'I don't listen to the BBC news on the radio because it's too fast for me and I can't understand it.' That's a pity! When it's too fast for you, when you can't understand it, that is exactly when you NEED to listen to it!!! How can you improve if you don't listen and practise? When you were a baby, did you understand your own language? When you were 3 weeks old, or 2 months, or 1 year, did you understand everything? Of course not! But you *learned* to understand by *listening*. Think about it. You learned to understand your own language by listening, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. After that, you learned to speak. Then you learned to read. And then you learned to write. But listening came first!

Пресса Великобритании
On the 11th March 1702, Britain’s first newspaper – the Daily Courant – began publishing from rooms above the White Hart pub in Fleet Street. It was more like a leaflet than a newspaper as it was just a single page with two columns. Publishing started in Fleet Street around 1500 when William Caxton's apprentice set up a printing shop near Shoe Lane. William Caxton was the first English person to work as a printer and the first person to introduce a printing press into England. Caxton was born in around 1422 in Kent. He went to London at the age of 16 to become an apprentice to a merchant, later moving to Bruges, the centre of the wool trade, where he became a successful and important member of the merchant community. From 1462 to 1470 he served as governor of the 'English Nation of Merchant Adventurers', which allowed him to represent his fellow merchants, as well as act as a diplomat for the king.
More about this person read here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/caxton_william.shtml
Fleet Street was the home of the British press until the 1980s. Most of the major national papers were located here. Since the digital printing revolution, most have moved, and only Reuters remains. The Times and The Sun moved to Wapping. The Guardian went to the Isle of Dogs, and the rest went to London’s Docklands. Fleet Street is named after the Fleet River, one of the many rivers that now flow beneath London's streets to the Thames.

These days an annual International Championship conformation show for dogs, Crufts, organized and hosted by the Kennel Club, is held in England. It lasts four days. The main competition is for the Best in Show award. This title was first awarded in 1928. This Championship was named after its founder, Charles Cruft, who worked as general manager for a dog biscuit manufacturer, travelling to dog shows both in the United Kingdom and internationally, which allowed him to establish contacts and understand the need for higher standards for dog shows. In 1886, Cruft's first dog show, billed as the "First Great Terrier Show", had 57 classes and 600 entries. The show continued annually and gained popularity each year until Charles' death in 1938. His widow ran the show for four years until she felt unable to do so due to its high demands of time and effort. To ensure the future and reputation of the show, she sold it to The Kennel Club. It was also at the Centenary celebrations in 1991 that Crufts was officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest dog.

International Women's Day
In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named Clara Zetkin (a ieader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands. The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, working women's clubs, and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament, greeted Zetkin's suggestion with unanimous approval and thus International Women's Day was the result.
