I must learn that I cannot be loved by everyone. That is the ideal. In our world it is not often found. I can be the finest plum in the world, ripe, juicy, succulent and offer myself to all. But I must remember that there will be people who do not like plums. I must understand that if I am the world’s finest plum and someone I love does not like plums, I have the choice of becoming a banana. But I must be warned that if I choose to become a banana, I will be a second rate banana. But I can always be the best plum. I must realize that if I choose to be a second rate banana, I run the risk of the loved one finding me second rate and wanting only the best, discarding me. I can then spend my life trying to become the best banana – which is impossible if I am a plum – or I can seek again to be the best plum. In other words, if you are a plum – be the best darn plum you can possibly be –

Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson at Daresbury in Chesire, on 27 January 1832. He was an English author, mathematician, logician, anglican deacon and photographer. Lewis Carroll is most famous for his story, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865. It was written for Alice, the daughter of a friend. His other writings included the sequel 'Through the Looking-Glass' as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky".The poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, is considered by many to be one of the greatest nonsense poems written in the English language. It was originally featured as a part of his novel 'Through the Looking-Glass', and 'What Alice Found There' (1871).

Tomorrow will be the birthday of Scotland's most famous poet, Robert Burns, celebrated with great festivity by the Scots.

Robert Burns
25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796

The poet was born on 25 January in 1759, in Ayrshire in Scotland. Robert Burns (also known as Rabbie Burns, Scotland's favourite son, the Ploughman Poet, the Bard of Ayrshire and in Scotland as simply The Bard) was a Scottish poet and a lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a "light" Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. Burns Supper

Scots people all round the world celebrate Burns' birthday on this night with a Burns Supper.

Traditional Scots food include scones, Dunlop cheese and shortbreads. Another traditional Scots food is Haggis. It is made of a sheep's or a calf's liver, heart and lungs, chopped with onions, seasonng, suet, and oatmeal, and boiled in a bag traditionally made from the stomach of a sheep or calf.

A traditional Scottish meal is neaps (swede), tatties (potato) and haggis washed down with whisky.

International Thank You Day

11 января можно без преувеличения назвать одной из самых «вежливых» дат в году — в этот день отмечается Международный день «спасибо» (International Thank You Day). Каждый человек прекрасно осознает значение хороших манер, их необходимость в повседневной жизни, но большую часть благодарностей мы выражаем, как бы невзначай, не задумываясь об их смысле. Однако, слова благодарности обладают магическими свойствами — с их помощью люди дарят радость друг другу, выражают внимание и передают положительные эмоции — то, без чего наша жизнь стала бы скудной и мрачной. Неспроста во многих туристических путеводителях и наставлениях туристам часто указывается: слово «спасибо», произнесенное даже с акцентом на языке страны пребывания, повышает скорость, качество обслуживания и помогает наладить спокойный и приятный отдых.

Считается, что русское слово «спасибо» родилось в 16 веке из часто произносимого словосочетания: «спаси Бог». Интересно, что и корни английского аналога — Тhank you — также уходят гораздо глубже простой благодарности. Это говорит о том, что и русское «спасибо», и «спасибо», произнесенные практически на всех языках мира, имели и имеют чрезвычайно важное значение для культуры любого народа. Известно, что староверы не используют слово «спасибо», они избегают его в своей речи, поскольку считают, что это слово родилось из словосочетания «спаси Бай». Бай — это имя одного из языческих богов.
Психологи уверены, что слова благодарности — это «устные поглаживания», которые способны успокоить и согреть своей теплотой. Главное, чтобы слова благодарности произносились от чистого сердца! Неслучайно издавна в народе существовало очень мудрое поверье — не произноси слова благодарности в состоянии раздражения.

Наступает очень добрый и светлый Праздник!

Существует множество славных и добрых традиций и обычаев его встречи. Однако, если мы собираемся праздновать Рождество как христиане, то конечно же среди подарков не должны присутствовать “знаки” наступающего года по Восточному календарю, амулеты, обереги и прочие сувениры “на счастье” легкомысленно купленные “по случаю” в магазинах. Такая “милая” безделушка лишь покажет ваше пренебрежение и к Празднику и к тому, кому вы собираетесь подарить её на Рождество. Более того, таким подарком можно просто расстроить верующего человека. Лучше уж пусть это будет нейтральная вещь, не несущая никакого религиозного смысла.

Как встретить и провести Рождество по-настоящему

Любому человеку, который желает встретить Рождество не как светский праздник, а действительно по-христиански (даже если он не соблюдал рождественского поста), стоит придерживаться нехитрых, но важных правил.
Во-первых,

Сочельник

С давних пор канун Рождества в России называется Сочельником. Название Рождественского Сочельника связано с обычаем православных христиан употреблять в этот день в пищу "сочиво" – сушеные хлебные зерна, размоченные в воде, попросту говоря, кашу. Сочивом звались не только каши, но и овощи, всякая постная пища, также сок, или, как говорили раньше, «молоко» разных семян: миндальное, ореховое, маковое, конопляное и др. Этим «молоком» приправляли каши во время сорокодневного поста перед Рождеством и в рождественский Сочельник.

Новогодние традиции

New Year

At midnight on the 31th of December bells ring out around the world to welcome the New Year. There are also many other interesting New Year celebrations and customs. In Europe many people prepare special food. Swiss women bake bread, rich in butter, eggs and raisins. They also cook roast goose. Children go from house to house greeting people and going inside. People in Italy hold parties with salt pork and lentils on the menu. Lentils are supposed to be lucky and bring money, perhaps because they look like small piles of gold coins. In Spain it is customary to eat 12 grapes in champagne at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Groups of friends visit restaurants in Turkey where they spend the night and give and get presents. Some people in Greece play cards, hoping that a win will bring them luck for a whole year. New Year myths are very old. New Year means new beginnings, so, for example, in Italy people throw old clothes, broken cups and plates out of the windows. An old English custom was to burn juniper inside the house while the doors and windows were closed – to fumigate the home and people for the coming year. When they couldn’t stand the smell any more, they ran out of the house, breathing in cold fresh air.

In Russia there are also our own traditions to celebrate New Year.
